Wize The Producer is Breathing New Life into Classic UK Freestyles

Before Daily Duppy and Fire In The Booth, the scene’s coldest spitters would roll up to Tim Westwood’s show on 1xtra to let go of their freestyles, or they’d spray straight into a camera for the likes of Risky Roadz and SBTV. Those freestyles are still free to view on the internet, but save for the odd clip that makes it’s way to twitter or instagram, they aren’t much celebrated. Wize The Producer is giving new life to these historic moments by lifting the vocals of legends like Crazy Titch, Chipmunk and Giggs and placing them on his own vibarant and original production. Like a tailor so good at their job that they can gauge someone’s chest, leg and neck measurements with a single glance, Wize is crafting beats around these moments of UK rap heritage, beats that are very much the flavour of today yet manage to compliment and even enhance the spirit, pockets and the cadence of the iconic freestyles, many of them close to 15 years old.

Wize’s remixes are like returning to the area you grew up in after some years away and realising that the buildings on the street have been rejuvenated. I know this sounds a lot like the gentrification we’ve become all too used to but it’s not that. Wize’s edits maintain that familiar gritty feel even with the new production; it’s like the blocks in the ends where you spent your childhood have been revitalised but the community in the area remains the same: your neighbour that used to babysit you as a child still lives across the road, the same bossman that’s owned the local newsagents for as long as you can remember is still running his business. Lock in to one of Wize’s IG lives and you might get to see behind the curtain as he streams the making of the remixes, giving light to the process. The reworking and repackaging of music’s magical moments is a long-held tradition, one which Wize is dedicated to the upkeeping of.
